Enhancing Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

There is a lot of emphasis put on certain aspects of intelligence such as logical reasoning, math skills, spatial skills, understanding analogies, verbal skills etc. among students and their parents. While IQ can predict academic performance and, to some degree, professional and personal success, but people with high IQ also do poorly in life. Often the missing parts in the success equation is emotional intelligence (EQ) 90% of high performers in the work place possess high EQ, while 80% of low performers have low EQ. Simply put high EQ is critical for children and young adults as it leads to greater academic success, reduces incidences of bullying, violence, and other misbehavior.

When you meditate, you are fully alert, but your mind is not focused on the external world or on the events taking place around you, your mind is clear, relaxed, and inwardly focused.

Meditation is not about clearing your mind and stopping all thoughts, but rather it is about giving your mind something to focus on and about the practice of bringing yourself back to that intention over and over again until the inner state is still and one-pointed so that the mind also becomes silent. When the mind is silent and no longer distracts you, meditation deepens.

Meditation and psychosynthesis:

The fundamental psychosynthesis technique for working with all aspects of the will is the “self-identification exercise” or the “body-feeling-mind meditation”. The goal of this self-identification exercise is to systematically connect and bring awareness and affirmation to the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of the personality and then guide and help us to disidentify from each aspect and connect to the “I,” the source of pure consciousness and will.

Psychosynthesis recognizes three types of meditations:

  • Reflective meditation (to acquire in-depth understanding of our ordinary consciousness)
  • Receptive meditation (to open ourselves to the wisdom of the higher Self), and
  • Creative meditation (to regenerate and transform our personality).

All effective meditation is understood as “inner action” and results in spiritual energies that produce changes in oneself.
